To complement the two and four-wheel drive 993 Carreras that were available in coupe and cabriolet body styles, Porsche launched a new RS variant at the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1995. Available only as a rear-wheel drive Coupe (and not legal for sale in the United States), it was the ultimate naturally-aspirated 911.
Lighter, faster, and more aggressively styled than other 993s, this latest RS also addressed the criticism leveled at its unrefined predecessor. When purchasing a Carrera RS, buyers could choose one of three variants. The M001 option code was for RSR Cup Racing Spec, the M002 was for a standard RS, and the M003 was for the RS Clubsport.
The optional RSR Aero Kit consisted of wraparound full width front spoiler and adjustable dual plane rear wing.
RS production began in late 1994 and ran through early 1996. 1104 993 Carrera RSs were built including 49 right hand drive UK spec vehicles. When the subsequent 996 switched to a water cooled engine the 993 Carrera RS went down in history as the most potent naturally-aspirated air cooled 911 ever made.
